This Eclectrocasts podcast features vocal and visual artist, sonic explorer, and autonomous dis-illusionist, Sky High Diamonds (UK)
Sky High Diamonds is the musical outlet of Sarah Gatter who defines herself as an experimental DIY sound poet. Inspired by a combination of acoustic sounds, electronic sources, pre-recorded and spontaneous sounds, Sarah often develops homemade percussion to explore space and rhythm. Her work takes on a poetical formation through the use of chanting and physical movement alongside meditative and trancelike vocals and harmonies. She works with drums, beats & pulsing drone-like vibrations, which become the backbone for further constructing sounds and vocals in layers and textures.
Current projects include a short film sound track for the film 'To The Ends Of The Earth' by Frida Go (Zoe Young), 15th-24th November 2017, The Poly, Falmouth, UK, for more information visit Frida Go | Artist Adventurer The film sound & theme track samples a live performance vocal from Ramonda Taleni Te Maiharoa who is a 'Landscape singer,' using her voice to augment the natural sounds around her. This Eclectrocasts podcast features Bungendore, NSW Australian sound sculpture artist, Instrument builder, and experimental synth noise drone musician Brian McNamara, who publishes his music under Cup & Bow and his instrument designs as Rarebeasts.
Brian McNamara mixes his passions for music, electronics and sculpture into unique objects that should need no explanation to play or experience but convey a deeper meaning in the context of their surroundings.
Brian McNamara builds a range of experimental instruments, with a focus on both autonomous soundart sculptures and interactive installation instruments that require the engagement of multiple people or unusual kinetic movements to be played. His instruments include computer programmed elements, percussion, found sounds from used electronics and purpose designed oscillators.
A key feature of Brian McNamara's work is audience movement and participation. Art functions best when the art space is inclusive of the public so through his exploration of experimental sounds he uses engagement with the audience as a medium to convey ideas. These explorations include the link between the environment and technology, our own movement around the planet with movement of those fleeing war torn areas and the link between our own minds and those we try to create in machines.
Brian McNamara was a national finalist for the Etsy design awards for his soundart piece The EMDS synth (2015) and won the ReArt peoples choice award for the Automaphone (2015) an autonomous device that interprets drawings into music.
We spoke with Brian McNamara via Skype on 9 July, 2017.
